Manhattan Compost Project
The Lower East Side Ecology Center operates the Manhattan branch of the NYC Compost Project, a program funded by the New York Department of Sanitation to reduce the amount of "waste" exported by NYC by composting biodegradable trash into "black gold," thus creating a greener, more sustainable NYC. For more information please visit www.nyccompost.org

Working with residents, public schools, community gardens and organizations, LESEC offers free workshops on both indoor composting with earth worms as well as rat-proof, Manhattan styles of backyard composting. Attendees of our workshops will receive a voucher for a Worm Condo (with 1 lb. of worms!) of their very own at the bargain price of $10. New York City residents are able to purchase subsidized back yard compost bins during spring and fall compost giveback events. Thanks goes to the NYC Department of Sanitation for subsidizing these resources.

The Rot Line
A composting hotline, aka the Rot Line, is available by phone (212.477.3155) and email (info@lesecologycenter.org) Monday through Friday for problem solving in the battle against fruit flies and strange smells. This is also the place to request a workshop, or RSVP for one.
