Backyard Composting Workshop

The Manhattan Compost Project presents all you need to know about pest and hassle free composting in the unique yard spaces of New York City. Explore your options, learn how to set up and maintain different styles backyard composting systems, and become eligible for subsidized composting materials at this hands-on event!

This is a two-workshop series:
Tuesdays, September 12 and 19, 6-8pm

The NYC Compost Project presents a two-event series on the Hows and Whys of composting in New York City. We will discuss different scales and designs for outdoor composting in an urban setting, setup and maintenance, and then what to do with our finished compost. Participants will come away with hands-on experience in producing and using compost on their own. We strongly recommend attending both workshops. Light refreshments will be served. Workshops are free, but please RSVP.
The workshops will be taught jointly by the NYC Compost Project Staff at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Staten Island Botanical Garden and the Lower East Side Ecology Center. In addition, GreenThumb will be joining us on the 12 th , and GreenThumb gardeners will be able to order soil, compost or cleanfill for their gardens for fall '06 or spring '07 delivery after this event.
September 12: This hands-on workshop will introduce different scales and designs for outdoor composting in an urban setting. Workshop participants will be able to obtain a subsidized compost bin ($20 for either a Garden Gourmet or a Metal Compost Can) thanks to funding by the Department of Sanitation. Please PRE-ORDER your subsidized compost bin at 212 477 4022.
September 19: Now that you learned how to compost, learn what the finished product can do for your garden and plants. This workshop will discuss the secrets of healthy soil, why how to use compost, how to make your very own compost tea and more.
Master Composter Certification Program
Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 and November 2, 6-8pm

This program is designed to promote the practice of urban composting and consists of 25 hours of classroom training. Classes will be held at 273 Bowery, just south of Houston Street. The course will also offer two field trips to compost sites on separate weekends and participants must complete 30 hours of volunteer outreach service to receive their Master Composter Certificate. Food Scrap Composting in Community Gardens

Kick your compost up a notch by incorporating food scraps from your kitchen. This workshop will present a road-tested, pest-free outdoor food scrap composting system from assembly to harvest. This workshop will also present ways to integrate your food scrap composting project into your site, in terms of space as will as reaching out to partners in your neighborhood neighbors to support your efforts and share the benefits.

Our worms are hopping the A train and heading up to Inwood! Come learn how to make compost indoors with a worm bin as we set up a Worm Condo at the Inwood Hill Nature Center. The Manhattan Compost Project is offering a hands-on family worm workshop. Participants will learn how to set up and maintain a worm-bin in an apartment and will be able to purchase a worm-condo for the subsidized prize of $10 to turn kitchen scraps into usable compost matter!
