EcoBizNYC Participating Business Profiles

 

The Lower East Side Ecology Center’s EcoBizNYC Program rates participating local businesses who are currently taking strides in reducing their environmental impact in areas of electricity, HVAC, waste, transportation, procurement, food, retail products, water, greenspace, and employee training/community outreach. Each business’ EcoBizNYC Sustainability Rating is determined by comparing how far a business has come to how much further it can go towards environmental sustainability. The scale below determines a participating businesses’ EcoBizNYC Sustainability Rating:

Gold Sustainable Business: 50-70%

Silver Sustainable Business: 30-50%

Sustainability-In-Action: Sustainable NYC has reduced the number of lights in the store, installed CFL bulbs and low flow faucets and water-saving toilet flappers, weatherized the storefront, uses a hand dryer in the customer bathroom and towels in the staff bathroom, powers their sign with a solar panel, increased their reuse and recycling programs, joined the ConEdison Solutions Wind Power Program, used eco-friendly paints and materials to build their space, and buys from local, organic, and socially responsible vendors.

Sustainability Goals: Sustainable NYC plans to install a canopy to shield the storefront from the sun.  They are also looking into installing automatic light controls such as motion sensors to further reduce electricity use, installing a programmable thermostat, offsetting all shipping and transportation emissions, and composting in a worm bin.

Sustainability Goals: Teich plans on installing solar film on the windows and has requested that the City put in a bike rack in front of the shop. Teich is also planning to add an indoor plant to their store.

Sustainability-In-Action: Teich Design sells their own line of handbags, made from eco-friendly materials such as hemp and deerskin and the shop features a selection of accessories by local designers. All of the lighting is LED and CFL. All of the displays and furniture are vintage or second hand. The store was painted with VOC-free paint purchased at Green Depot. Teich’s uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and recycled toilet paper.

Sustainability-In-Action: All of Xoom’s food service items (cups, lids, straws, etc.) are made from sustainable resources and are compostable.  In addition, all of Xoom’s cleaning products are eco-friendly and most of them are bought in bulk from the Green Depot.  Xoom is working with Wearable Collections, a textile recycling company, to encourage customers to donate their textiles to be recycled and reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. Xoom uses local honey and is looking to partner with other local farms to feature Greenmarket Specials on the menu.

Sustainability Goals: Xoom has replaced the majority of its light bulbs with CFLs and plans to replace the remaining three immediately.  Xoom is also researching renewable energy options through Con Ed. Xoom would also like to expand its community outreach in regards to sustainability and is working with the East Village Community Coalition to be a part of their annual Bike Parade.

Sustainability-In-Action: Ost Café conserves energy by rarely using their air conditioning and instead opening up their large front windows for ventilation. The café conserves water by using low-flow aerators in all of its faucets, and has eliminated bottled water usage. Ost also has a bike rack for customers. Ost is also proud to use only eco-friendly bathroom and cleaning supplies to make a healthier atmosphere inside the café. Sustainability Goals: Ost Café plans to replace its old light bulbs with CFL and LED bulbs as they burn out. They plan to install water saving devices in their toilet to make their toilet into a low-flow toilet. In the summer Ost plans to compost some of their coffee grounds in local community gardens. Ost also plans to provide a sustainability training for their employees.

Sustainability-In-Action: Swing Salon is an eco-chic boutique that is Green America approved, a winner of the Greenopia Distinguished Business Award, and is a ConEdison Green Power Pioneer. Swing selects its product lines based on their health effects, performance, price, and environmental and social sustainability. Swing highlighting and color formulas are plant based and ammonia-free. Swing also encourages its clients to wash their hair less frequently, to keep hair products out of our water systems. Swing also works to reduce indoor air pollution through minimization of VOC’s in the furniture and wall paints, and uses a carbon-filtered air purification system. Swing uses 100% wind energy from ConEdison Solutions. Swing selects its computers in consultation with GreenPeace’s Electronic Report Card. Swing serves its clients tap water in compostable cups. Swing also composts all hair clippings.

Sustainability Goals: Swing Salon plans to install a toilet flapper, shut off all power strips at night, caulk around windows to prevent heat/cool loss, install additional CFL bulbs, identify and use an effective eco-friendly laundry detergent and attend the EcoBizNYC workshops.

In addition, Butter Lane’s products are made from at least 50% organic ingredients and they have planted at least 10% of their available green space.

Sustainability Goals: Butter Lane plans to replace incandescent light bulbs with CFL bulbs, adjust air conditioning and heating settings when the store is not occupied, install a door sweep, cover or remove their AC unit during the winter, purchase recycled toilet paper and eco-friendly cleaning supplies, and apply for a Honeywell water conservation kit to install aerators, water displacers, and water-saving toilet flappers.

Sustainability Goals: Hair Design plans to test out some new non-toxic hair sprays to reduce the fumes in the salon from aerosol hair spray. The salon is also interested in switching to more environmentally friendly cleaning products.

In order to retain the heat and/or cool air in the store, Mamani has a door sweep. There is a bike rack in front of the store for customers and employees. Mamani has recycling cans for customers, and recycles its vegetable oil with RWA Resource Recovery. Mamani is proud to serve its famous $0.99 slices of New York’s finest on recycled paper plates.

Sustainability Goals: Mamani is working with ConEdison to replace all of its light bulbs with more efficient light bulbs. This program will also help to upgrade the air conditioner to a more energy efficient model.
