SUMMARY:Everyday Gourmet: A Tasting and Cooking Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ecology Center and Chef Al to learn new culinary techniques and turn summertime leftovers into new\, flavorful recipes \nWe all have forgotton or expired condiments and wilting produce hanging out in the back of our refrigerators. Together\, we will learn how to turn these ingredients into something exciting and delicious. Save money\, reduce food waste\, and build confidence in using what you already have! \nParticipants can expect a live cooking demonstration from Chef Al featuring multiple recipes that creatively use common fridge staples and lingering odds and ends. There will be plenty of tasting\, tips\, and adaptable techniques you can use at home. \nGot something wilty\, an old jar of olives\, or a sauce thats been tucked in a corner for months\, or even years? Bring it with you! We’ll also learn how to tell if something has truly gone bad or if it’s salvegable and we’ll give you recipes for using that item up! \nThis workshop is part of our Reuse and Re-Imagine Series – A new series of workshops designed to empower our community with new skills while keeping waste out of landfills. \nFunding provided by the Environmental Protection Fund as administered by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. \nSign up →

SUMMARY:City of Water Day: Coastal Connections at Pier 42
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this year’s activities\, aligned with the theme of Living with Water\, is to recognize our shared responsibility to steward the environmental systems that sustain us. Pier 42\, like all urban green spaces\, requires ongoing care and maintenance to remain both an enjoyable public park and a fully functioning climate resiliency system. We believe that the more people understand these ecosystems—and the plants and wildlife that inhabit them—the more motivated they will be to protect them. For this year’s City of Water Day\, our team will lead a walking tour of Pier 42\, highlighting its green infrastructure and coastal resilience features\, while also introducing participants to the native plants that can be observed throughout the park. The walk will be followed by stewarding the bioswale. \nSign up →

SUMMARY:Slow Circuits: Wire Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Are you fatigued by your phone? Are you wary of technology’s impact on our ecosystems? \nOn July 25th\, Slow Circuits is hosting a weaving circle where we will discuss our conflicted relationship with technology as we weave with discarded ethernet cables. Think technology anonymous meets weaving circle. Each participant will create and take home their own woven art piece. \nBy weaving with the discarded remnants of our digital lives\, this tactile engagement follows a discussion around our current circuits: where our technology comes from\, its lifecycles\, and its afterlives. By slowing down and contemplating these relationships\, we will make visible the material and ecological costs inherent in our technologies in order to discuss the circuits we desire. We’ll ask: how can we build alternative models to planned obsolescence? How can technology reconnect us to what we care about? How can we turn waste into a medium of connection and care? \nGet your tickets now. Learn more about Slow Circuits on Instagram: @slow.circuits \nThis workshop is part of our Reuse and Re-Imagine Series – A new series of workshops designed to empower our community with new skills while keeping waste out of landfills.\nFunding provided by the Environmental Protection Fund as administered by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. \nSign Up → \n
