DESCRIPTION:The focus of this year’s activities\, aligned with the theme of Living with Water\, is to recognize our shared responsibility to steward the environmental systems that sustain us. Pier 42\, like all urban green spaces\, requires ongoing care and maintenance to remain both an enjoyable public park and a fully functioning climate resiliency system. We believe that the more people understand these ecosystems—and the plants and wildlife that inhabit them—the more motivated they will be to protect them. For this year’s City of Water Day\, our team will lead a walking tour of Pier 42\, highlighting its green infrastructure and coastal resilience features\, while also introducing participants to the native plants that can be observed throughout the park. By slowing down the pace of technological consumption and inviting tactile engagement with the remnants of our digital lives\, Slow Circuits transforms waste into a medium of connection and care\, inviting participants to confront their own entanglements within global extractive supply chains while learning practical skills for repair and reuse. Hell’s Kitchen Commons accepts food scraps at Mathews Palmer Park (45th between 9th/10th Ave) during the park’s open hours. \nThis is a community-managed compost drop-off site. Participants are asked to ensure the area remains clean and the bin lids remain closed after food scraps are dropped off. Participants must follow the guidelines for what to contribute. You are also invited to join the Hell’s Kitchen Commons volunteer team. Email hellskitchencommons@gmail.com to be added to their volunteer What’s App group. \nPlease note: Food waste from households only. NO businesses or other commercial generators may drop off.
