East River Park

We work with community residents, encouraging stewardship activities in East River Park since 1998. Each year community volunteers contribute countless hours of their time to the upkeep of the park, tending to garden beds and enhancing the park by planting native plants and bulbs.

Through the summer, our stewardship coordinator Melinda leads volunteer hours on Saturday for local residents to contribute to the park’s health. If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, please contact us at Sign up for specific stewardship days on our Stewardship Form!

Community Garden

The Lower East Side Ecology Center Garden was founded in 1990 and is located on E 7th Street between Avenues B & C. This open space, which was a rubble-filled, city-owned lot when we received the lease, inspired the Ecology Center to start a compost program. Every tree and plant in the garden has grown up on compost made right on site.

The garden now serves as a compost drop off location, and in its park-like setting offers the community a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Additionally, we showcase local artists through our “Arts Exposure Program” at the garden, bringing sculpture shows and live music performances to the community since 1997.
